Some shipping companies have stopped running entirely. Power plants that depend on river water for cooling are throttling output. Farmers are watching their fields turn to dust. Let's be clear about what's at stake here. The Rhine is not just a pretty river that poets write odes to. It's the artery of European industry. Roughly 80% of Switzerland's foreign trade travels on it. Germany's Ruhr valley, the industrial heartland of Europe, relies on it for raw materials and finished goods. Why the Water's Disappearing

The cause is as predictable as it is terrifying: a drought that has gripped much of Central and Western Europe for weeks. The Alps, which feed the Rhine and Danube, are seeing record-low snowpack. The rains that usually replenish the rivers in late spring and early summer never came. Instead, Europe got heat waves that turned the soil to concrete and sucked moisture out of the air.

And in Austria, a hydroelectric plant on the Danube had to shut down one of its turbines because there wasn't enough water to spin it.

The knock-on effects are everywhere. Steelmakers in the Ruhr can't get iron ore. Farmers in the Rhineland can't get fertilizer. Supermarkets in Switzerland can't stock their shelves with fresh produce. The supply chain that Europe took for granted for 70 years is unraveling, and it's doing so in real time.

The Economic Toll Is Real

Let's talk about money, because that's what politicians in Berlin and Brussels actually care about. The German government's economic advisers have already slashed their growth forecast for 2026 from 1.4% to 0.8%. That's a full 0.6 percentage points wiped off the table, and most of that is due to the river crisis. The French central bank is warning of similar downgrades. The European Central Bank is starting to sweat about inflation, because food prices are already spiking.

Here's the thing: this isn't a one-off event. Europe has been here before. In 2018, a similar drought hit the Rhine, and it cost Germany an estimated €24 billion in lost trade in just one quarter. The coal plants that are already struggling are emitting more CO2 than ever because they're running inefficiently at partial load. The trucks that are replacing barges are spewing diesel fumes. The entire system is lurching toward a cliff, and no one's stepping on the brakes.

What Happens Next?

If the drought continues through August — and the long-range forecasts suggest it will — we're looking at a recession in Germany by the fourth quarter. That will drag down France, Italy, and the rest of the Eurozone. The ECB will have to choose between raising interest rates to fight inflation or cutting them to support growth. Either way, someone's going to get hurt.

And what about next year? The snowpack in the Alps is already at record lows. Unless Europe gets a deluge of rain this autumn — and I'm talking biblical amounts — the rivers will start 2027 in a precarious state. This isn't a one-summer problem. This is a permanent shift in the continent's hydrology, and the economy hasn't adapted.
